About the event
Jay is a captain and naturalist with Seven Seas Whale Watch in Gloucester where he has worked for 35 years. He began whale watching in 1981 when he was 8-years-old and his father took him on a 10-day, 120 mile offshore fishing trip aboard his family's fishing boat, the Easter-rig dragger the "Lady in Blue". On the way out to Cultivator Shoal they passed a group of whales, the sight of which made such an impression on Jay that two years later, in 1983, his father started Seven Seas Whale Watch.
Jay's interest in nature (whales and birds in particular) continued and in 1997 he graduated from UMASS/Amherst with a degree in "Wildlife and Fisheries Biology". He has worked in various capacities at Seven Seas and other companies in many places including: Alaska, South America, Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, and the Caribbean, studying and giving talks about the whales and other marine life of those regions.
In addition to his interest in biology, Jay is also an avid amateur astronomer, photographer, artist and student of the pre-Columbian archeology of the Cape Ann area. So in addition to sharing his knowledge of whales and marine biology, he is sure to work some of those other subjects into his talk as well!
