Facilities Maintenance Specialist

20-30 hours per week

Maritime Gloucester is seeking a skilled applicant to perform a variety of maintenance, repair, construction, and cleaning duties. Position requires basic handyman, and janitorial skills to help provide for a safe and efficient operation and working environment. 

 

Essential Duties:

 

  • Ongoing review of site and facilities to ensure positive presentation and prevent future operational issues.

  • Arrange meeting room setup, moving exhibits, furniture, and equipment as requested or needed for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for programs or special events.

  • Light installation of facility components (e.g. lighting, heating and ventilating systems, alarms, plumbing, security, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment.

  • Cleanup and maintenance of our historic waterfront location, including pier, wharf, and land-based needs.

  • Performs a wide variety of general and semiskilled maintenance activities (e.g. carpentry, painting, electrical, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects within established time frames.

  • Maintains tools and equipment in working condition.

  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

  • Perform seasonal grass cutting and weeding, snow shoveling and plowing activities.

  • Identifying and diagnosing areas of concern or disrepair. Assists skilled tradesmen with projects for the purpose of completing projects in a manner that is safe and efficient for Maritime Gloucester and its visitors.

  • Other maintenance duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Maintains welcoming and positive attitude with visitors, staff, and volunteers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and building staff.

  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision. Understanding of role and personal abilities. Knows when to seek support.

  • Able to work, and maintain a workspace that is safe and visually appealing to the general public. Must maintain a low profile to not detract from visitor experience.

  • Knowledge of general building maintenance; principles of carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical work; basic principles of heating, ventilation, and cooling systems; principles of locks and building locking and security systems.

  • Minimal understanding of Federal, state, and local building codes preferred.

  • Able to lift and/or carry up to 80 lbs. Up to 125 preferred.

  • Able to work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power equipment in a safe and effective manner; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Three years experience performing entry-level maintenance and repair work.

  • Experience in the use and operation of power tools including drills, electric saws, table saws, planers, and band saws.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Possession of a valid Massachusetts Class D drivers license required.

  • Forklift Operators license or Hoisting certificate helpful but not required.
