PROGRAM

A Maritime Gloucester Program in Partnership with Maritime Heritage Charters

Calling all aspiring mariners and sailors! Maritime Gloucester and Maritime Heritage Charters are seeking apprentices for the 2023 season.

The Mariner Apprentice Program gives aspiring mariners, age 16-22, real commercial vessel experience, teaching skills that will be beneficial to them throughout a career at sea, and inspiring them to follow their passion for being on the water.

Join us at Maritime Gloucester and at the Burnham Shipyard every second and fourth Sunday of the month. During these sessions, apprentices will learn various topics ranging from traditional seamanship to diesel mechanics. Off-season training will lead to a season aboard the Schooners Ardelle and Isabella where sessions will continue underway.

The skills and sea time gained through this program are designed to aid apprentices in gaining a US Coast Guard vessel license, become competent in vessel operation and maintenance, or to begin or continue a maritime career.

Anyone interested in enrolling in the Mariner Apprentice Program should email Michael DeKoster at MDeKoster@MartimeGloucester.org. A maximum of six cadets will be selected per vessel at any time but apprentices are welcome to join the program at any point during the season if openings allow.
