About Maritime Gloucester
Maritime Gloucester is a nonprofit maritime museum, aquarium, and working waterfront campus located on historic Gloucester Harbor. Our mission is to inspire students and visitors to value maritime heritage, marine science, and environmental stewardship through hands-on education and experiences. We combine a museum gallery, Sea Pocket Aquarium, science exhibits, and historic vessels to connect people of all ages to Gloucester’s seafaring story and ocean environment.
Position Summary
The Front Desk Associate is the welcoming face of Maritime Gloucester, ensuring every visitor has an engaging, positive experience from the moment they arrive. This person handles daily admissions, membership sales, shop transactions, and general visitor inquiries, while supporting the smooth operation of the museum and aquarium campus.
The ideal candidate enjoys interacting with the public, is comfortable managing cash and point-of-sale systems, and takes pride in creating a friendly, organized environment for visitors and staff alike.
Hours will be 9:45 AM – 4:15 PM shifts on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Schedule will be coordinated with other front desk associates; 1–3 shifts per week available initially.
Compensation is hourly; rate depends on skills and the scope of responsibilities the candidate is interested in taking on.
Primary Responsibilities

Greet and assist visitors, providing information about exhibits, events, memberships, and site amenities.

Operate the front desk point-of-sale system for admission, membership, and store sales via Shopify and Fare Harbor Point of Sale systems.

Maintain accurate daily cash and credit card transaction records.

Re-stock gift shop inventory as needed.

Turn on museum exhibits.

Coordinate with education and aquarium staff to ensure smooth visitor flow during busy periods.

Answer phone and email inquiries; forward messages as needed.

Open and close the site as scheduled, ensuring spaces are secure and ready for guests.

Support volunteer coordination and event setup as needed.

Share enthusiasm for Maritime Gloucester’s mission and encourage visitor engagement with programs and memberships.
Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable engaging with families, tourists, and local visitors.

Reliability and punctuality for assigned shifts (Friday–Monday, approximately 9:45 AM – 4:15 PM).

Experience in customer service, hospitality, or retail preferred.

Basic computer skills

Point-of-sale proficiency (training provided).

Ability to work independently and as part of a small, collaborative team.

Interest in marine science, local history, or education is a plus.
Work Environment
This role is based on-site at Maritime Gloucester’s harborfront campus. The position involves standing for periods of time and occasional light lifting (e.g., merchandise boxes or event materials). Maritime Gloucester is open rain or shine, so flexibility and a positive attitude in a dynamic, public-facing environment are essential.
